This summer, we took our first long road trip with the kids to go see Jimmy’s grandparents who live in Fountain, Colorado. After two days of driving, we finally made it! Thanks to audiobooks and iPads, it was a pretty uneventful drive. In the short time we were there, we got to visit some beautiful sites in Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs and Cañon City. These included the Olympic Training Center, The Garden of the Gods, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun and The Royal Gorge.
Days 1 and 2: Travel from La Vernia, Texas to Amarillo (nine hour trip) and then Amarillo to Fountain, Colorado (six hour trip). All together, it was a pretty easy drive both days. Sydney helped us by providing massages when we finally arrived 😉We loved the Olympic Training Center. I wish we could have seen more of the facilities there. On our tour, we had the privilege of seeing a wrestler, Kyle Snyder, who was prepping for the Olympic Games in Rio. The Garden of the Gods and Manitou Springs were awesome. It was a hot day for a hike, but I’m so glad we went. I’d love to go back and explore it in the fall.Carly Barton PhotographyIt was a rainy day when we went to the zoo. Halfway to the top of the mountain, we got stuck on the sky ride because of lightning and small hail. We didn’t get to see all of the zoo, but it cleared up in time to drive up to the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun. The views were amazing and it was one of my favorite spots of the whole trip. The Dinosaur Experience – The Royal Gorge — Cañon City, ColoradoFor this trip, we decided to forego the rafting trips and go see the dinosaurs first. Hunter even completed the ropes course! I’m proud of him for making it to the top all by himself. After that, we visited The Royal Gorge. Due to rain coming in, we didn’t get to do the zip lines or sky coaster (I definitely want to come back for this one day!).
